Lets talk about the bulls ...

Now that we are in the midst of our 2011/12 calving season, the calves have been hitting the ground since June. We had about 7 calves within a short period of time and then things slowed down but with a new arrival today, we're expecting 3-4 more this month. So far the bull calves are dominating the calf scene- after two years of a rate of 75% females, it's a little disappointing especially as our source for dog food (the really young bulls went to a raw dog food company) won't take the bull calves this year. What we really want is to sell the bull calves live for others to raise for themselves, and perhaps eventually we will raise bulls ourselves. We did sell a young'un to a local family, and now we have had requests from others to purchase multiple bull calves which is a huge relief.
We do know that there will be some heifer calves somewhere down the line as last year when we had a number of the cows preg checked, a majority of them appeared to have females in them.
