Long days ...

It is a good thing that I don't get paid to write, but then, if I did get paid perhaps I'd make the time to write. As for quality of writing, I am afraid that has been left behind -assuming that quality did exist in the first place. I stumble out of bed at 5:30am now that I'm milking in the mornings (quiet B&B week, and now that we have guests for the next week, I will be milking due to the absence of two family members), have my breakfast; change, feed, and bundle Mason into the car seat and stroller and head for the barn. When my head hits the pillow at 11pm, if I'm lucky Mason will let me sleep until 2am, and if I'm even luckier, he won't get up a second time. It would appear that it's not my son that needs sleep training but me. 11pm? What keeps me up until 11:00? Maybe it's the need for a couple of hours of 'quiet' time after putting Mason down at 8pm (where he'll then lie awake for two hours before finally going to sleep at 10). What does quiet time entail? Baking. Cookies for us and the dairy; granola for breakfast; muffins for breakfast. Or ironing. Answering emails. Eating ice cream. It turns out that my pregnancy love for ice cream has stayed with me.
We have a 19 year old German girl living with us right now and having those extra hands has perhaps saved me from losing my mind, or at least slowed the process. She said the other day that our days (lives) are exhausting. I think the realization that we don't get weekends off - or Christmas for that matter- has just hit her.

Our garden is heading into our freezer now. We've been processing beans, broccoli, and beets- now Hubs is down the bank picking blackberries (12lbs today). Meanwhile I am desperately trying to complete this blog post with a heavy 8 week old hiccuping into my arm.

Two weeks ago, experiencing our first slow B&B week of the summer, Hubs and I took advantage of a quiet Saturday to head to Courtenay- I love Courtenay, I don't even know why. I've always thought that if I didn't live in the Cowichan Valley, that the Comox Valley would be my second choice. Our really good friends, formerly of Kamloops, have just moved there and we tied the visit with them in with a stop at the island's second water buffalo farm. This farm purchased their animals from us at the beginning of the year, and are currently putting together their milking parlour. They will also sell to Natural Pastures.
